What are international flight liquors rules?

Most airlines allow liquor, but it should be in limited quantity, as per the airline standard, which has been set to ensure the safety and security of the authority and the passengers traveling on the flight. As per the alcohol limits international flight rules, passengers can carry up to 5 liters of alcoholic beverages as checked-in baggage. However, the following conditions must match the standards mentioned below.

  • Alcohol beverages are in retail packaging and must be appropriately packed to prevent some damage or leak.
  • Alcohol content must not be less than 70%.

Alcoholic beverages are only permitted in carry-on baggage at the time of purchase from the airport security hold area. They should be placed in a transparent, re-sealable plastic bag, and the plastic bag capacity must be within 1 liter. The dimensions of a 1-litre bag must be as follows: 20.5 cm x 20.5 cm or 25 cm x 15 cm or equivalent.  The counter must be within the given size limit to fit inside the bag and must be completely closed.

How much alcohol can I carry on an international flight?

You must be careful while taking alcohol in carry-on baggage, and passengers must follow the carry-on liquor rules. The rules state that the passenger can carry up to 3.4 ounces or 100 liquids in cabin baggage. If the alcohol is blended with 24% to 70% ABV, it can carry up to 5 liters ( 1.3 gallons) of spirits in checked baggage. However, bottles with partially consumed alcohol are prohibited on flights altogether. So passengers must ensure that the bottles either remain closed completely or are empty. The leftover liquids must be transferred to smaller bottles that can be properly sealed and packed for transit.

It is also advised not to open wine after sitting on the flight because wine ages itself. It is a live spirit that can react quickly to the heat, pressure, and motion inside the flight.  So it will be dangerous to open immediately after the flight takes off. You need to leave the wine to get stabilized for at least 48 hours after keeping it and keep it in a standing position so that the end liquid does not touch the cork.

What are the age restrictions for alcohol on international flights?

It has been seen that several age restrictions for alcohol may vary by nation's airline. The average age for drinking alcohol is between 18 to 21. Mostly in US-based airlines, passengers under 21 cannot be served with drinks, and the license must be shown to receive the alcohol.

If it is Mexico, then the legal drinking age is 18, and any passenger above that age, despite having a different nationality, can get the drinks on the flight.

What documentation is needed for carrying alcohol on international flights?

Passengers must have the proper receipt for the liquor, or if the person bought it from the airport duty-free shop, they must carry the slip. The alcohol must be completely sealed or empty. Otherwise, it is not allowed to be carried inside the flight.
